Usually early that morning or even in early afternoon the fire would be obtained, then later that afternoon or in the very early evening the church service would begin, the fire being brought in on a long "hasta" or processional spear. We never could manage to do the thing of twisting the candles together--there must be some lost lore on how to do that. A long candle-snuffer/lighter was then used to take the flame from the hasta and transfer it to a short thick candle from which the censer charcoal was lit. Then the extinguished hasta would be relit from the blessed fire and taken in procession to the Paschal candle, which at the right time was lit from the hasta. C'mon, y'all, don't fall asleep on me. M or Traditio, (Fame or Imfamy depending on how one views him) used to have a resource on his page. I have not viewed his page in many a moon, but I doubt he would have expelled it from his list of vendors.

Posts: 376 Apr 20 06 7:49 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hmmm, my brother Ari's comment got me thinking... the old practice of using the glass, isn't it really getting fire from the heavens? In the old practice of the Church in Germany, which originally got its liturgical practice from Anglo-Saxon England, the glass used for this obtaining of the fire was even borne in the paschal processions. Of course in England it's overcast much of the time, and so the Anglo-Saxon and Sarum hymn for Holy Saturday's blessing of the Paschal mentions the mystical meaning behind the fire being struck from flint: Christ is the Stone and we are but the faint sparks derived from Him. I think St. Bede mentions the getting the fire from the heavens, but I will have to double-check that.
